SYDNEY, Australia - Prime Minister John Howard on Sunday called general elections in Australia for Nov. 24, cautioning voters about his opponent’s plans for a withdrawal from Iraq and reminding them he has overseen the country’s long economic boom.

Howard, one of Washington’s staunchest allies in Iraq and the broader war on terror, is seeking a fifth term and hoping to save his reputation from the final judgment that he should have quit while he was ahead.

Labor Party leader Kevin Rudd, a Chinese-speaking former diplomat 18 years Howard’s junior, has held a commanding lead in opinion polls since December over the 68-year-old prime minister, whom he claims is out of touch after more than 11 years in power.

The six-week campaign, long by Australian terms, ends months of intense unofficial politicking.

While domestic issues such as the economy, education and the hospital system are likely to dominate the campaign, Iraq and global security lurk in the background.

Howard has maintained close ties with Washington — Australia’s most important foreign partner — and sent 2,000 troops to join U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. He has said the 1,600 Australian forces still in the country will stay as long as they are needed.

Rudd has promised to withdraw Australia’s 550 combat troops, in consultation with Washington while leaving the rest in training and other roles.

Howard on Sunday conceded his Iraq policy was unpopular with many Australians, but said withdrawing too soon would embolden terrorists worldwide.

"I know a lot of people don’t agree with me, but I do not think it is in Australia’s national interest to participate in a premature withdrawal from Iraq," he said.

Howard is counting on a boost from more than 15 years of economic growth, which he said only he had the experience to continue to ensure, and warned the public not to trust Rudd and his party because they are untested in government and beholden to labor unions.

Rudd countered by mocking Howard with a list of perceived failings.

"Mr. Howard has had a lot of experience in taking Australia into a war without an exit strategy," Rudd said, referring to Iraq. "Mr. Howard has a lot of experience in denying that climate change represented an economic and environmental challenge for this nation’s future."

There is no sign the prosperity, fueled by China and India’s voracious demand for Australia’s coal and other minerals, will end soon, and Howard is running on his stewardship of the economy despite five recent interest rate hikes that have sent mortgage repayments higher.

Rudd says he will mirror the government’s successful economic policies, while accusing Howard of being too old-school to tackle modern issues like global warming and a high-speed broadband network.

Howard, 68, became Australia’s most powerful leader in a generation in the previous election in 2004 when he won control of both houses of parliament. But his popularity has slipped in opinion polls, which now show the margin of around 4 percent he holds in his Sydney suburban district may not be enough to stop him from losing his seat in parliament — a humiliation suffered by only one other prime minister in 100 years.

Australia is America’s best friend and ally. Australia has fought along side of the U.S. in every war since WW II. No other country can say that.

Im not sure if this is already the hot topic of this category but I just read about it. I am completely dumbfounded! The revelation prophesy (before the anti Christ’s arrival) is that they will ready the world from a global economic system and a one world government…. other christians also interpret a one world religion.
Now the one world economic system is here… The G20 leaders are planning on it tomorrow.
China proposed a reserve currency that the UN is backing, but if they ditch the rest (there are 7), we’d all be forced under one currency and Gordon Brown is proposing a "new global deal"…. so interlinking all the economies by this bond …. (and like how I said up there somewhere ^^, if they abolish it, because of the "new global deal" we’d all be under one).

What is your opinion on this new step toward a "new world order".

I have been following this for many years. There is a man to come on the scene according to the Bible who will attempt to rule all nations and set himself up as God. In order to do that he must bring the world together economically, politically and religiously. The time of this prophecy is upon us.

Yes, that was in the aggregate of the four measures of: economic participation, education, health, and political empowerment.

This is because the ratio of working women vs. working men is smaller in the top countries than it is in the U.S. It has nothing to do with wage discrimination.

EDIT: Actually, I dare you to give me the Governmental source. I’ve analyzed it a 100 times for illiterate word-twisters, and I will do so again. Here it is in advance:
- nowhere does it say it is due to discrimination; many factors could have been involved, such as: education, time working (women usually take time off from the work force, and as a result, they will be paid less upon re-entry), women less likely to negotiate a higher salary as a study demonstrated, etc, etc. Also, if you’ve read it (which I doubt), you’d have read that part-time women make more than part-time men, and according to the study, there are a lot more part-time women than part-time men. The reverse is also true: full-time men are more numerous than full-time women and therefore earn more. WHY is is not an issue for you that part-time women ”out-earn” par-time men? I wonder… Finally, in female dominated jobs such as nursing, desk clerk, etc., women earn more than men. It’s only in male dominated jobs that men out-earn women. Why? Because of the greater numbers of male/female workers. I will make a blog entry analyzing the source in detail.

I would say the book "Generations" by Strauss and Howe.

It analyzes generations in American history and makes predictions about Gen X, Gen Y, etc.

Like the children born now…. Gen Z…. born from 2000-2009… are predicted to be the best artists ever.

All transportation to be computer controlled and free for all who join Energy Force.
The new jobs in all areas of converting and maintaining new transportation systems will generate millions of jobs.All Commercial and private transportation will be regulated by Energy Force.
In our country, all citizens will be provided with free transportation for any purpose as long as they are a contributing reservist in the Energy Force.

The Energy Force will be set up like conventional military with schools, housing, basic training, full health benefits,recruiting offices and facilities for public education.
Once one joins Energy Force they are a member of that branch of the armed forces until they wish to stop driving or using energy.
Every Us Citizen will be eligible to join the Energy Force, including those who are in jail. It is hoped that many can be released to work towards building new American Energy plan.

If elected President I will make it so the voting age is lowered to and a part of joining Energy Force at 10years old.
Everyone in this country can contribute to a greener country, those who are too old or too feeble to work will be given classes in how to conserve. A Big part of the Energy Force will be using today’s youth to be involved with our elders and disabled in community programs promoting Energy Independence.

I will promote the arts and sciences more than the religious groups, and I WILL welcome all helpful input towards stated goals.

The Energy force will take us out of our troubles and fix things as they should be.
The United States will be free of many bad things if you elect me:
No more electric bills
No more gas bills
No more transportation worries ( all who join Energy Force earns vehicle)
No more traffic accidents ( Road network fixed with Autopilot interface stripes in pavement)
No more Deaths by car
No more highway noise zones near neighborhoods (hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are quiet and clean)
No more failing US Auto Companies
No More Failing Airlines
No more war for oil ( hopefully no more U.S. bullying of oil countries, thus less terrorism etc… World Peace?)
No more oil dependency
No more Gasoline vehicles
No more Greenhouse gases
No more stupid arrests for Cannabis
No more people dying who could have been helped by banned research in medicine
No more military relying on taxes for funding
No more national deficit
No more debt to foreign countries
No more uninsured Americans
No more illegal aliens
No more interaction with Middle Eastern Countries
No more threats to destroy pristine wilderness areas for obsolete oil below surface.
No more mistrea

Where Do I vote?

Let’s not discuss a one world government just yet…. but if you remember when the British prime minister came here he said we needed a one world economic system, what he called a "new global deal", what CNN called a "new world order"….. and now the UN are backing a global currency reserve. Our dollar is the leading reserve but if they abolish the other 7 (excluding the proposed new one), we’d be under one global currency.

What’s the article about? Seemed like just a lot of words.

No point to having global currency if I understand what the purpose of currency is. Even if it did happen it will be nominal, and they’ll find they have to break up the currecny by regions going back to exactly what we have, exchange rates.

I hope there is no such thing.
